Last Friday, we learned of the Select Committee recommendation to split the Rodney district into two regions, as part of the proposals for the new Auckland Council.
The Auckland Council’s northern boundary is proposed to follow a line between the mouth of the Puhoi River and the mouth of the Makarau River. This would see Whangaparaoa, Orewa, Kumeu, Helensville stay in the Super City, while all the area from Waiwera north, would merge into the Kaipara District.
Rodney Mayor Penny Webster was shocked by the Select Committee’s recommendations; “It just doesn’t make any common sense. It may have made a little more sense if the boundary had been drawn to include the entire Kaipara harbour.”
Mrs Webster says the majority of people in Rodney have been consistent in not wanting the district split up, with little support for the option taken by the Select Committee at the public hearings held in July.
“Based on the submissions to the Select Committee, I would have to say the people of Rodney never asked for their district to be split.
“Many submissions supported the idea of Rodney becoming a unitary council, and very few suggested splitting the district.”
Under the proposed Auckland Council structure, Rodney will only get one ward councillor and is likely to have only one local board. This will make it very difficult for local issues to get the attention they deserve when competing with a voting block of 18 metropolitan councillors.
Have Your Say
Prime Minister and Helensville MP John Key has said that if there is enough community support the Government will back down on the proposed boundaries for the Auckland Council.
If you have concerns about the Select Committee’s recommendations, then contact your local Member of Parliament as soon as possible and let them know your views.

Rodney District Council makes many important decisions on a day to day basis, which affect a wide variety of people across the district. In order for us to make the best possible decisions and to improve our services, we rely on input from Rodney residents.
During this period of change, it’s particularly important that we have a quick and low cost way of finding out local residents’ views.
Earlier this year, Rodney District Council introduced an email based Citizens Panel made up of local residents who are invited to have their say on a range of issues about Council plans and services.
To ensure the panel represents all the different communities within Rodney, we are looking for a wide range of people from different age groups, ethnic backgrounds and geographical locations to participate.
For only a few minutes each month you could help improve the Rodney district by sharing your views about all sorts of things that affect your life in Rodney.
Sound interesting? For more information and to sign up to the Citizens Panel, click here.
Rodney District Council is undertaking consultation on whether liquor bans should be introduced in the area around the Old Cement Works in Warkworth. The Council is also considering a ban at Lake Tomorata near Mangawhai, as part of its review of the liquor ban bylaw. Problems have been reported in these areas with people drinking and the Police support the introduction of liquor bans at these two locations.
There are already liquor bans in place at a number of other locations throughout Rodney and the Council is proposing that these will remain.
More information about the consultation is available on the Council’s website and at Council service centres. People can make submissions on the draft Liquor Ban bylaw up until Friday 25 September.

Mayor Penny Webster says the Council has listened to its community by releasing the schedule of council-owned property that it may consider for sale “at the right price.”
Mrs Webster says the Council had resolved initially to not release the list, as there were concerns that public debate may have put off potential purchasers and jeopardised the maximum return to ratepayers.
“Whilst there is still some commercial risk attached to publication of the list, Council believes the wishes and interests of our ratepayers outweigh those risks,” says Mrs Webster.
However, she stresses that the schedule is not a list of properties which are to be sold immediately.
“These are some very marketable properties. There is no doubt about that, even in today’s climate. But that still doesn’t mean we are actively marketing all of them.”
“People need to understand that they only up for sale – should the right offer be made, at the right time, with the right conditions attached.”

This week communities across New Zealand, and here in Rodney, have joined together to help clean up their neighbourhoods as part of Keep NZ Beautiful Week.
This weekend clean ups have been organised in Gulf Harbour, Puhoi, Warkworth, Orewa Beach, Leigh and Waitoki. Clean ups are also planned at Puhoi and Wenderholm next weekend.
Anyone interested in participating in the clean ups can find out more information online at www.knzbcleanupweek.co.nz or by contacting Rodney District Council on 0800 426 5169.
Rodney District Council is assisting with many of the clean ups by providing gloves and helping to dispose of rubbish.
The Council would also like to hear about any areas where there are problems with litter so that we can do something about them.
Our roadside maintenance and stormwater contractors regularly clean up different parts of the Rodney District on a rotational basis. People can report litter to the Council by calling 0800 426 5169 or emailing customerservice@rodney.govt.nz
